The Story
Tragic Loss on Mother’s Day: Ana Carrillo Rodríguez (Alma’s Daugther)
On Mother’s Day 2024, the Huntington Park community experienced a heartbreaking tragedy that left us all in shock and sorrow. Ana Carrillo Rodríguez, a beloved local resident, was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the very streets where she grew up. Ana, 39 years old, was a cherished daughter, sister, and friend, known for her kindness and vibrant spirit.
That evening, Ana was riding her black and blue motorized scooter, walking her German Shepherd, as she often did. It was between 8 and 9 PM when the tragedy struck. As she traveled south on Hope Street, near California Avenue and in front of Mariscos El Levanton, an unknown driver hit her and fled the scene. The driver responsible for this senseless act remains at large, leaving Ana’s family and friends devastated and seeking justice.

Huntington Park Dedicates “Ana Rodriguez Square” Honoring Beloved Community Member
City Marks One-Year Anniversary with Permanent Memorial Designation at Hope Street and California Avenue; Promotes Community Awareness and Safety
HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. — One year after a tragic Mother’s Day hit-and-run deeply impacted a close-knit Southeast Los Angeles neighborhood, the City of Huntington Park gathered today to permanently honor the memory of Ana Rodriguez — a beloved stagehand, dog lover, and lifelong resident remembered for her warmth, kindness, and strong connection to the community.
The City officially dedicated the intersection of Hope Street and California Avenue as “Ana Rodriguez Square” during a public ceremony held on May 12, 2026 — the one-year anniversary of her passing. The designation, established by Resolution No. 2025-26 and approved unanimously by the Huntington Park City Council on Sept. 9, 2025, makes permanent a tribute that her family transformed into a message of awareness, remembrance, and community unity.
In the days following Ana’s death, her family decorated the intersection with flowers, photographs, and handwritten messages — transforming a place of grief into a lasting tribute to her life and memory. Their efforts helped inspire ongoing conversations surrounding pedestrian and driver awareness, neighborhood safety, and community responsibility.
“This dedication honors Ana’s memory and reflects our shared commitment to awareness, responsibility, and looking out for one another in our community,” said Mayor Eduardo “Eddie” Martinez. “Ana’s legacy will continue to bring people together and remind us of the importance of compassion, attentiveness, and community connection.”
[NOTE: Quote requires Mayor Martinez’s review and approval before release.]
Ana’s legacy also inspired Awareness Needs Action (A.N.A.), a community initiative focused on promoting pedestrian and driver awareness, education, and neighborhood engagement. The City looks forward to continuing conversations with the family and community partners regarding future awareness efforts inspired by Ana’s memory.
Resolution No. 2025-26 recognizes the designation as both a tribute to Ana Rodriguez and a reminder of the importance of community awareness and shared responsibility on local streets.
